Largest Private Mexican Network Pilots Steriwave
Ondine Biomedical Inc. (AIM: OBI), a leader in light-activated antimicrobial therapies for the prevention and treatment of hospital infections, is pleased to announce a partnership with Hospital Ángeles Health System (Grupo Ángeles Servicios de Salud, S.A. de C.V.; “Hospital Ángeles”), Mexico’s largest nationwide private healthcare network to launch a multi-center pilot of Steriwave® nasal photodisinfection. This expansion follows Ondine’s Phase 3 pivotal trial results from its 5,188-patient study in Canadian and US hospitals, with positive topline results showing a 40% reduction in post-surgical infection rates over standard of care alone.
Hospital Ángeles is one of Latin America’s leading private healthcare networks, operating 27 hospital complexes across Mexico and delivering integrated care across more than 55 specialties. The network performs approximately 150,000 surgeries annually, pairing world-class specialist expertise with continuous investment in advanced medical technology, including a fast-growing fleet of surgical robots across platforms such as da Vinci Xi, Hugo™ RAS, and Mako SmartRobotics™ systems. Its clinical excellence is supported by more than 37,000 certified specialists, many of whom trained at top North American and European institutions. Serving both domestic and international patients, Hospital Ángeles is positioned at the intersection of private healthcare, surgical innovation and Mexico’s growing medical tourism market, offering North American patients world-class surgical care competitively priced relative to comparable US facilities.
The clinical deployment initially targets two of the network’s flagship facilities, with the intent of establishing a new benchmark in infection prevention and pre-operative care:
- Hospital Ángeles Acoxpa (Mexico City): A premier high-volume robotic surgery hub, Acoxpa will demonstrate how Steriwave’s rapid, 5-minute light-activated treatment can seamlessly integrate into fast-paced surgical pipelines without disrupting workflow efficiency.
- Hospital Ángeles Valle Oriente (Monterrey): Serving an elite domestic demographic and a growing international medical tourism market, this highly specialized center will utilize Steriwave to offer advanced, non-antibiotic protection for complex orthopedic and cardiovascular procedures.
Carolyn Cross, CEO of Ondine Biomedical, stated:
“Following positive topline results from our Phase 3 pivotal study, our expansion into Mexico represents a major milestone in our broad commercial strategy. Hospital Ángeles is an exceptional partner for Ondine, combining national scale, modern facilities, clinical expertise, and advanced technology to serve patients from Mexico and across the globe.
“Mexico is a large, fast-growing, high-value healthcare market with a compelling combination of advanced medical technology, clinical expertise, affordability, and proximity to patients across Canada, the United States, and Latin America. The global medical tourism sector is estimated at approximately US$76 billion annually and is projected to exceed US$174 billion within the next decade,[1] driven by increasing demand for high-quality, specialized medical care delivered at competitive rates. By integrating Steriwave’s rapid, antibiotic-free infection control into Hospital Ángeles’ surgical pathways, we are working towards setting a new standard for patient safety that directly addresses the top priority of international patients.”
Mexico is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading medical tourism destinations, attracting approximately 1.4 million medical tourists annually.[2] This creates a significant opportunity for private hospital networks that combine advanced facilities, specialist care and international standards of patient experience. The initial pilots at Hospital Ángeles Acoxpa (Mexico City) and Hospital Ángeles Valle Oriente (Monterrey) are being conducted on a commercial basis, with Hospital Ángeles purchasing Steriwave treatments for use at both sites. The deployments are underway, with evaluation for a broader network-wide rollout to follow.
