Nasal decolonization:
evidence-based recommendation.

The nose is a major reservoir for infection-causing pathogens.

Many harmful bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Pseudomonas, live harmlessly in the nose but can spread to wounds, medical devices, or other vulnerable sites where they cause serious infections. As a common source of transmission, the nose is a critical target: disinfecting it helps lower the risk of healthcare-associated infections, protect patients and staff, and slow the spread of drug-resistant organisms.

In 2023, leading epidemiology bodies updated their guidelines to classify nasal decolonization as an Essential Practice Recommendation
for orthopedic and cardiothoracic procedures, supported by a high level of evidence.

Simple and effective process

1. Apply

Using pre-saturated swabs, the nostrils are gently coated with the Steriwave formulation, which adheres specifically to pathogens.

2. Illuminate

Using a disposable nasal illuminator, non-thermal light at a specific wavelength is used to activate the Steriwave formulation.

3. Destroy

The reaction physically destroys microbes without harming human cells. Pathogens are unable to adapt, eliminating antimicrobial resistance concerns.

The Steriwave treatment is not associated with pain or discomfort. Some people experience a mild tingling or tickling sensation and, while the red light is on, you may feel a slight sense of warmth. These are normal. No significant adverse events have been reported. All adverse events logged by the company to date have occurred in 2 – 15% of patients and have been self-limiting in nature and non-serious. Do not use Steriwave if you are allergic to methylene blue or chlorhexidine or you have nasal anatomical defects which prevent easy access to the nostrils.
